Bleeding Gums: Things You Can Do

never ignore bleeding gums, as the condition can be the result of a variety of issues.
Bleeding gums can be due to gingivitis, pregnancy, or severe gum disease. When you notice bleeding, here are some things you should do.
Remove Plaque Completely
One of the biggest causes of bleeding gums is the buildup of plaque on the gum line. If you do not remove the plaque completely and right away,
the plaque will harden and turn into tarter. Tarter is a calcified substance which draws even more plaque to the gums. Tarter buildup will irritate
the gums further and turn into serious gum disease.
To help keep this from happening, you should re-evaluate your oral care routine. You should brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. You
may notice some bleeding at first, but the bleeding will eventually stop as the gums get healthier.
Use the Right Toothbrush
Another reason your gums are bleeding is the toothbrush you use. Although a toothbrush with medium or firm bristles may seem to do a better job at getting the teeth clean, the toothbrush can also irritate the gums and make them bleed. Instead, consider a softer bristled toothbrush. Your teeth will still be clean and your gums will not be as irritated.
You should also look at the method in which you brush your teeth. Your toothbrush may be fine, but you could be brushing too hard. You should
also be careful when you floss. If you floss too hard, consider using a gentler approach to see if the bleeding subsides.
Improve Your Diet
The things you eat and drink may also have an impact on how much and how often your gums bleed. Any food or drive with simple carbohydrates or sugars will have a negative impact on your teeth and gums. Sugar is the perfect fuel for plaque growth.
Consider a diet lower in sugar and higher in vitamin-enriched foods, such as vegetables and some fruit. While you do not have to completely shy away from some of your favorite treats, be sure to only eat them moderately. You should also brush and floss immediately after you indulge so plaque will not have time to form.
Check Your Medication
Some of the medication you take can also have an impact on how often you experience bleeding gums. Aspirin and blood thinners can cause your gums to bleed as these medications reduce the thickness of the blood. Some prescription medications are prone to more bleeding than usual.
If you notice your gums are bleeding more than usual and you believe the medication is the cause, be sure to speak to your doctor about possibly changing your medication or dosage.
Go to the Dentist
If you have taken all of these steps and you do not notice an improvement, you should see your dentist about the bleeding. He or she will do an examination of your teeth and gums to find out if you have a significant issue. Your dentist will x-ray the gums and teeth to get a better picture of what may be happening.
Your dentist may recommend different treatment options depending on your particular case. Some treatment options can include periodontal surgery, or a deep cleaning of major tarter buildup.
